Chapter 7

The next day, Lena met Emmanuel at the community center, Near the Jazz District and Kansas City’s historical,18th and vine, like he asked.

They were taking their first dance class. The non-profit had rented out a room for the month of February. Lena learned more about the ballet dancer, Misty Copeland, who was born in Kansas City, MO, Alvin Ailey, Josephine Baker, and a ballroom dancing couple she had never heard about. Their names were Margot and Norton. In their time there weren’t many black ballroom dancers. Lena wondered if they were a romantic couple, their chemistry was electrifying.

“You ready to dance?”

Lena hadn’t noticed that Emmanuel walked up behind her.

She shook her head and took a step back. “I really don’t know how to dance.”

“Today, I’ll teach you.” He put his hand out for her to take it.

She put her hand in his, and he led her to the dance floor.

Many of the couples from the night before were in the same room. Lena wasn’t ready to embarrass herself in front of them again.

Emmanuel gently pulled her to the dance floor and tried to twirl her to him, but she twisted awkwardly.

“I’m sorry.” She covered her face.

He wrapped his arms around her. “It’s okay. Relax.” He reached for her hand again. This time when he turned her, she tried too hard and came back to him so quickly that they bumped heads. He fell to the floor.

“Oh no! I’m so sorry.” She kneeled next to him and he rubbed his head.

He laughed. “You didn’t have to head butt me. I know you’re still mad at me.”

“I’m so sorry. Really! Oh my goodness!” She sat on the floor next to him. “This isn’t working out. I wanted to make you feel bad, but I’m the one feeling horrible.” She put her arms on her knees and laid her head on them.

Emmanuel moved closer to her. “So stop trying to make this go a certain way and just go with the flow. Let’s get to know each other again. At least enjoy the events, even if you’re going to dump me after the next few days.”

She looked up at him. “You’re right.” She smiled.

“You have the most beautiful smile.”

Lena looked away. He always told her that and it always made her blush.

The dance instructors and kids came in the room. The kids checked on Emmanuel, who Lena was learning was their teacher. They graciously welcomed her back.

The instructors introduced all the mentors around the room, including Emmanuel. They also told the group that they would be learning the Tango.

That didn’t make Lena happy at all. Her two left feet were for sure going to be tangled.

They started the demonstrations and Lena was lost from the start. All the counting and moving wasn’t her thing.

Emmanuel gently guided her even though she stomped on his foot too many times to count. After she kicked him in the shin he had to take a break She helped him to a chair. Her apologies were numerous and he simply rubbed her hand to calm her.
